Understanding the root cause
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common disorder in which stomach acid moves upward in the esophagus and causes heartburn.
This acid reflux can damage the esophagus lining. If it causes frequent symptoms and injuries, reflux develops into GERD.
Living with GERD can be crippling. Not only does it limit the foods you can tolerate, but it can also interfere with a restful night's sleep, cause digestive distress, and even impact overall mood and well-being.
Most often, GERD management is a multi-dimensional effort of working with a medical doctor, nutrition and lifestyle coach, fitness expert and even a mental health expert to mediate stress.

Conditions such as pregnancy and obesity can put more pressure on the abdomen.
Is this program for me?
Gut Dysbiosis management requires a holistic approach, with a team of experts to guide you towards your recovery journey. Here are a few treatment modalities we integrate.

Ozone therapy offers powerful support for those struggling with GERD. It helps control gut inflammation, repair the intestinal lining, and restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria by eliminating harmful pathogens. By boosting digestion, enhancing nutrient absorption, and strengthening the immune system, ozone therapy promotes deeper gut healing from the inside out. Its strong antioxidant properties also protect gut cells from damage, speeding up recovery and resilience.

People with GERD often have impaired nutrient absorption due to chronic acid suppression (like long-term use of PPIs). IV nutrition delivers vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the irritated digestive tract.

Why Choose Us?
We emphasise Nutritional and Lifestyle modification. Besides this, regular follow-ups help our doctor to monitor changes in your health condition, detect early gut damage signs, and evaluate the efficiency of the current treatment plan. Gut management tends to require changing medicines and therapies over time. Follow-ups help the doctor modify the treatment plan.
GERD isn't a “one-size-fits-all” condition. Different symptoms can develop differently in people, which requires personalization. Personalization involves customizing the treatment approach suited to precise requirements. As treatment is personalized to unique requirements and preferences, patients' outcome is assured and targeted.

Questions, answered
GERD, or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, is a condition where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus repeatedly, causing irritation. Unlike occasional heartburn, GERD is chronic. Left unaddressed, it damages the oesophageal lining and raises the risk of complications including Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer.
The most common symptoms are heartburn, acid regurgitation, and a sour taste in the mouth. Many people also experience a chronic dry cough, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, bloating, and disrupted sleep. Some have no heartburn at all but present with throat or respiratory symptoms, which makes GERD easy to miss or misattribute.
The primary cause is a weakened or dysfunctional lower oesophageal sphincter, the valve between the oesophagus and stomach. Contributing factors include obesity, a diet high in processed and fatty foods, frequent overeating, chronic stress, smoking, alcohol, certain medications, and a hiatal hernia. Gut dysbiosis and low stomach acid, often overlooked, also play a significant role.
Not always. A substantial number of GERD cases involve low stomach acid rather than excess acid. The symptoms feel identical, but the mechanism is different. Treating low-acid GERD with acid-suppressing medication makes the underlying problem worse over time. This is one reason a root-cause assessment matters before defaulting to long-term antacid use.
Proton pump inhibitors and antacids suppress symptoms but do not address the reason reflux is occurring. Long-term PPI use is associated with magnesium and B12 deficiency, increased susceptibility to gut infections, and accelerated gut dysbiosis. Most gastroenterology guidelines recommend using them for the shortest necessary period alongside lifestyle intervention, not indefinitely.
A clinical diagnosis is made based on symptom history. Where symptoms are atypical or severe, an endoscopy, oesophageal pH monitoring, or manometry may be used to assess the extent of damage and rule out other conditions. Functional medicine assessment also looks at gut microbiome health, stomach acid levels, and dietary patterns that standard workups typically skip.
In many cases, yes. Dietary changes, weight management, stress reduction, and correcting underlying gut dysfunction significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms for a large proportion of patients. How much reversal is possible depends on how long the condition has been present and whether structural changes like Barrett's oesophagus have developed.
At Clinic Living Plus in Bangalore, the team investigates the root cause driving your reflux rather than suppressing the symptom. This includes assessing stomach acid levels, gut microbiome health, dietary triggers, and any structural contributors. Treatment is built around your specific case and may combine functional nutrition, targeted supplementation, stress management, and where appropriate, a structured plan to reduce dependency on acid-suppressing medication. The goal is resolution, not indefinite symptom management.
Anyone with recurring heartburn, acid reflux, or persistent digestive discomfort lasting more than a few weeks. Also anyone currently on long-term antacid or PPI medication who wants to understand whether a root-cause approach could reduce or eliminate that dependency.
