Understanding the root cause

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis (UC), one of the most common kinds of IBD and a chronic condition, causes inflammation and ulcers in the lower part of the colon, i.e., the large intestine. UC is often associated with drastic weight-loss, food-sensitivities, bloody stools and abdominal pain. All of these can leave a patient crippling and undernourished. Traditionally, the treatment for UC was limited to steroid or biologic use.

However, at CLP, we help you get to the root cause of inflammation and help you reach remission with limited medical intervention.

What Causes Ulcerative Colitis?

A simple gut-friendly plate of fermented and fibre-rich foods

Those loaded with excess sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats — can disrupt the delicate balance of your gut microbiome. They trigger chronic inflammation, weaken the intestinal lining, and make the gut barrier more permeable. Over time, this “leakiness” allows toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream, setting the stage for digestive issues, autoimmune reactions, and widespread inflammation.

A man reclining in a clinic chair while a clinician prepares ozone therapy equipment

Ozone therapy offers powerful support for those struggling with Ulcerative Colitis. It helps control gut inflammation, repair the intestinal lining, and restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria by eliminating harmful pathogens. By boosting digestion, enhancing nutrient absorption, and strengthening the immune system, ozone therapy promotes deeper gut healing from the inside out. Its strong antioxidant properties also protect gut cells from damage, speeding up recovery and resilience.

How Can Ozone Therapy Help with Ulcerative Colitis?

Inflammation is the root- cause for most gut disorders. Inflammation is like an injury to the internal gut lining, causing more acid reflux.

With anti-inflammatory effects, ozone therapy can control inflammation in the esophagus caused due to acid reflux. Besides, Ozone therapy can help in modulating gut flora, calming acid-triggering dysbiosis.

How Can IV Nutrition Help With IBS?

People with Ulcerative Colitis often have impaired nutrient absorption due to chronic acid suppression (like long-term use of PPIs). IV nutrition delivers vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the irritated digestive tract.

Why Choose Us?

Regular Followups and Personalization.

We emphasise Nutritional and Lifestyle modification. Besides this, regular follow-ups help our doctor to monitor changes in your health condition, detect early gut damage signs, and evaluate the efficiency of the current treatment plan. Gut management tends to require changing medicines and therapies over time. Follow-ups help the doctor modify the treatment plan.

Ulcerative Colitis isn't a “one-size-fits-all” condition. Different symptoms can develop differently in people, which requires personalization. Personalization involves customizing the treatment approach suited to precise requirements. As treatment is personalized to unique requirements and preferences, patients' outcome is assured and targeted.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition confined to the colon and rectum. Unlike Crohn's disease, which can affect any part of the digestive tract, ulcerative colitis causes continuous inflammation and ulceration along the inner lining of the large intestine. It is the most common form of inflammatory bowel disease in India, accounting for the large majority of IBD diagnoses in the country.

What are the symptoms?

Frequent and urgent loose stools, often with blood or mucus, are the defining symptoms. Abdominal cramping, persistent fatigue, unintended weight loss, and anaemia are also common. Some patients experience joint pain, skin inflammation, and eye problems, which reflect the systemic immune involvement. Symptoms typically cycle between active flares and periods of remission, sometimes making the condition easy to dismiss as a passing stomach issue.

What causes ulcerative colitis?

The exact cause is not fully established, but the condition involves an immune response that mistakenly attacks the colon lining. Gut microbiome imbalance, increased intestinal permeability, genetic predisposition, and environmental triggers all contribute. Dietary westernisation, reduced microbial diversity from antibiotic overuse, chronic stress, and low fibre intake are consistently identified as factors driving the rising incidence in India.

Is ulcerative colitis the same as IBS?

No. IBS is a functional condition with no structural damage or inflammation. Ulcerative colitis causes measurable, progressive damage to the colon lining that is visible on colonoscopy. The symptoms can overlap, which delays diagnosis in many patients. Anyone with blood in the stool or persistent diarrhoea lasting more than a few weeks needs a proper investigation rather than an IBS assumption.

Can ulcerative colitis lead to cancer?

Yes, with longstanding disease. The risk of colorectal cancer increases with the duration and extent of colonic inflammation. Studies from India report a cumulative cancer probability of 1.5% in the first decade, rising to 7.2% in the second and 23.6% in the third. This makes long-term monitoring and active disease management essential, not optional.

Is ulcerative colitis curable?

Surgery to remove the colon is the only definitive cure, but most patients are managed medically. Conventional treatment uses aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics to induce and maintain remission. These suppress inflammation but do not address the gut microbiome dysbiosis and immune dysregulation driving it. A functional medicine approach works alongside medical treatment to reduce flare frequency and improve long-term outcomes.

How is ulcerative colitis diagnosed?

Diagnosis requires colonoscopy with biopsy, alongside blood tests and stool markers including faecal calprotectin and CRP. A functional assessment additionally examines gut microbiome composition, intestinal permeability, nutritional deficiencies common in active disease, and dietary and lifestyle factors influencing inflammation.

How does Clinic Living Plus approach ulcerative colitis?

At Clinic Living Plus in Bangalore, the team works with ulcerative colitis patients at any stage of their diagnosis. The focus is on identifying the gut microbiome imbalances, dietary triggers, and immune drivers specific to your case and building a structured management plan around them. For patients already on medication, the aim is to reduce flare frequency and improve quality of life between episodes. Comprehensive functional testing forms the foundation, and treatment is built around your disease history and individual profile rather than a standard UC protocol.

What nutritional concerns are relevant in ulcerative colitis?

Active disease impairs absorption and increases nutritional losses. Deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, and zinc are common and worsen fatigue and immune function independent of disease activity. Addressing these through targeted supplementation and dietary adjustment is a core part of managing the condition effectively.

Who should consider a consultation?

Anyone with a confirmed ulcerative colitis diagnosis experiencing frequent flares, inadequate medication response, or persistent fatigue and nutritional decline. Also anyone with chronic bloody diarrhoea or bowel symptoms that have not been properly investigated.
